A veteran of World War I he received the Victory Medal in October 1921.
He grew to manhood in the Hays area and was married to Catherine Brungardt on February 2, 1920, to this union eight children were born, six daughters and two sons who survive.
Having been reared on a farm he later moved to Gorham, Kansas where he managed a grain elevator until his retirement. A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gorham, Kansas and the Hays American Legion Post he was liked by all who knew him, a respected citizen, devoted husband and father.
To mourn his passing are his wife Catherine of the home in Gorham and his children, Mrs. Alberta (Andrew) Quint, McPherson, Kan.; Mrs. Viloa (Ed) Cramer, Liberal, Kan.; Mrs. Helen (Hilary) Windholz, Pratt, Kan.; Mrs. Dolores (George) Pace, Great Bend, Kan.; Mrs. Noreen (Maynard) Mosier, Pratt, Kan.; Mrs. Arlene (Loyd) Yarmer, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Elmer Weigel, Santa Monica, Calif.; and Francis Weigel of Great Bend, Kan. Twenty-six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Five brothers, Val Weigel, Morris Weigel, Bill Weigel, Dan Weigel and Hilary Weigel. Six sisters, Anna Beiker, Margaret Brungardt, Kate Weigel, Sister Cosmos, Sister Damian, Clara Clark.
One sister Mary Linenberger and one brother Ben Weigel and his parents preceded him in death.
Casket Bearers: Francis Milke, George Dreher, Ed Schmidtberger, Bob Hammersmith, Joe Hammersmith, and Walter Jocobs.
Laid to Rest: St. Mary's Cemetery, Gorham, Kansas. Hays American Legion Post rendering final military rights at graveside.
