Mrs. Agnes Ziegler, 87, beloved Atchison county pioneer, died at 10 o'clock Saturday night at her home near Cummings. A week ago she suffered a severe heart attack which resulted in her death. Mrs. Ziegler was a native of Germany but spent most of her life in Northeast Kansas.
Services will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) at 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran church in Nortonville conducted by the Rev. George Kettner. Burial will be in the family lot in the Nortonville cemetery. The Mair mortuary is in charge.
Mrs. Ziegler was born in Isingen, Germany, Sepember 10, 1853. She was married there to George Ziegler April 28, 1874. Several years later the couple and their four children came to America to the home of her uncle, J. Markle, in Atchison.
After residing here a short while the Zieglers purchased a tract of land near Cummings which is still one of the Ziegler farms. Eight more children were born to the union. Eleven of the 12 Ziegler children survive. One daughter died at the age of five years from burns received in a prairie fire. Mr. Ziegler died in August, 1916.
In her declining years Mrs. Ziegler made her home with her daughter, Miss Lena Ziegler, and her son, Charles Ziegler, who tenderly and lovingly cared for her. When her health permited she spent several months each year with her eldest son, George Ziegler, in LaFeria, Tex., and her son, John Ziegler, and her daughter, Mrs. F. V. Cooper, in Joliet, Mont.
No tribute could be too high for this splendid pioneer mother, whose family is a living monument to her memory. Her children returned the beautiful devotion which she held for them. She was all kindness and her acts for others were countless. While she held to the finest principles she was never a prude and was highly esteemed by both young and old. A life-long member of the Lutheran church she was truly a devout Christian and was happiest when she could attend worship. Only an occasional illness kept her from doing so.
Surviving are her children, Mrs. Katherine Moeck, Mrs. Christine Corkill and Jake and Frank Ziegler of the Nortonville community, A. J. and William F. Ziegler of the Cummings community, Lena and Charles Ziegler of the home, George Ziegler, LaFeria, Tex., and John Ziegler and Mrs. Frieda Cooper, Joliet, Mont.; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Niemann, Nortonville, Mrs. Catherine Niemann, Cummings, and Mrs. W. P. Ham, Atchison; a brother, John Frommer, Valley Falls, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
