Mayor Throckmorton Dead

John R. Throckmorton, 78, mayor of Waynesburg borough since 1967, died in his home sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning.

Although he had been in failing health for some time, he put in a full day in his office at the borough building Monday. When he failed to put in an appearance Tuesday morning, borough police went to his home at 275 West Franklin Street to see if he required any assistance.

The mayor's pet Doberman pinscher dog kept police at bay until a part-time housekeeper for the mayor could be brought to the home to calm the dog, and police found him dead in bed at 10:15 a.m. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Mr. Throckmorton, who was a retired banker, was appointed mayor in 1967 following the resignation of Wilma M. Millikan, and was re-elected in both 1969 and 1973. With his death, Council President William Millikan will serve as acting mayor until a successor is appointed.

Mr. Throckmorton, a son of the late John and Clementine Orndoff Throckmorton, was born January 30, 1896 at Waynesburg, where he resided all his life. He graduated from Waynesburg High School, attended Waynesburg College, and as a young man was widely known as a musician.

His banking career began in 1918 with the former Citizens National Bank. He joined the First National Bank and Trust Company of Waynesburg in 1927 and was elected assistant cashier that year. He became cashier of the institution in 1936, vice president in 1947, and executive vice president in 1951.

He retired from the First National Bank in 1961 and the following year accepted a position as vice president of the Gallatin National Bank and manager of the office the bank opened in 1962 at Waynesburg. He held the position for several years prior to his complete retirement.

Mr. Throckmorton was a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church; had been a member for more than 50 years of Waynesburg Lodge 153, F. & A.M.; had served on the board of governors at the Greene County Country Club, and was a member of the Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce and Waynesburg Lodge 757, B. P. P. O. Elks.

Mr. Throckmorton was an only child and his wife, Eleanor Lunger Throckmorton, died December 26, 1966.

Surviving is a daughter, Miss Eleanor L. Throckmorton of Pittsburgh.
