According to a letter she wrote in 1918, June made an attempt to learn about her biological background. She found that her natural parents were born in the same year, Eloda being from Iceland and her husband, Frank Pierce (no years available). A sister, Fanchon, was born 31 Oct 1897 and a brother, Wesley, born 1 Jun 1901. Eloda died at 29 years of age and June was placed in the Children's Home in St. Paul. All three children appear to have been adopted into different homes. June was adopted by Ludvig and Alvida Norby when she was twelve. They had two children at the time, although both were younger than she and two more children joined the family in the next years.

June graduated from the Alberta high school in Stevens County, MN. She also attended the nurses training school at the Deaconess Lutheran Hospital in Minneapolis for two years. She married on 16 Sep 1919 to Gilbert Gulbranson who also graduated from Alberta HS. They had one son, born in Morris, MN.
