Alvida's full name may have been Geline Alvida Burtness, but she was most commonly known as Alvida. Although she had been born in Iowa, her family had moved to Mekinock, near Grand Forks, ND, just after her birth. She was a student at the country school in Mekinock where Ludvig was the teacher. After her twentieth birthday they were wed, on 17 Jun 1899. The family lived for awhile in Pelan, MN but then moved several times within the next years while their family grew with the birth of four children and the adoption of one:
June Ethelson, adopted in about 1911 (m. Gilbert Gulbranson)
Odin Melankton (m. Estelle Watzke)
Palma Martha (m. Verner Berglund)
Lillian Adelaide (m. Norris Groth)
Constance Mae (m. Claire Groth)
