Odin was the only son of Ludvig Norby and Alvida Burtness Norby. He graduated from high school in 1920 and studied for a time at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. He married Estelle Watzke 4 Jun 1928 in Stevens County, MN. They were living in Mankato, Blue Earth County, MN when they had their two children.

One of Odin's brother-in-laws relates the following story. "Odin was an insurance adjuster living in Montevideo, MN with his wife and two young daughters. He was found murdered in a car and burned in a ditch. It is one of the unsolved murders of Minnesota since the prime suspect had a heart attack and died before he could be prosecuted." Following Odin's death, Estelle moved to Morris, MN where she raised her two daughters.
