Isaac was the eldest surviving child of Isaac and Joanna (Marks) Broad. His older brother, also named Isaac, died in infancy in 1832. After the second Isaac came Elizabeth, Phillis, Richard, Jane, Emily, Joanna, Eliza, Fanny, and Samuel Henry Broad.

Isaac worked as a miner by the year 1851. On this salary, he supported a wife, Elizabeth Martin Broad. Elizabeth survived her husband; their marriage appears to have been childless.
