Jacob (Jake) Lowen of Vauxhall, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Chestine Lowen, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2002 at the age of 80 years.
Jake was born at Marienthal, South Russia on December 6, 1921, the oldest of twelve children born to Abram Lowen and Gertrude Quiring. He came to Canada in 1926 with his parents, one sister and two brothers settling in Beaverlodge. He later moved to the Vauxhall area and in 1971 he married Chestine Tonge. Jake worked for the PFRA and later with the BRID as a ditchrider. He was a long time member of the Vauxhall Lions Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 193. In his spare time Jake enjoyed spending time in his garden.
Jake is survived by his step-children Shirley (Joe) Tokai of Picture Butte, Sharon (Ben) Bell of Red Deer, Donna Coss of Calgary, Harold Tonge of Winnipeg, Howard (Lana) Tonge of Calgary and John Kobal of Lethbridge; seventeen grandchildren; twenty seven great grandchildren; one great great grandson; brothers and sisters Sarah Fast of Calgary, Aggie Friesen, Lena Janzen, John (Vera) Lowen, Pete (Mary) Lowen, Anne Skretting, Mary (Jake) Unruh all of Vauxhall and Betty (Mike) Giacchetta of Readymade.
He was predeceased by his wife Chestine, parents Abram and Gertrude, three brothers George, Abe and Frank, step-daughter Joan Kobal, grandson John Kobal, four brothers-in-law Henry Fast, Hank Friesen, Frank Janzen and Gust Skretting and also by three nieces.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at the Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church, 320 - 9 Street North, Vauxhall on Wednesday, July 31 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Jim Lochhead, the United Church Of Canada, officiating. Interment followed in the Vauxhall Cemetery
