John was the son of William Maphis and Sarah C. (Reed) Maphis.

When John married in 1910, his middle name was given as 'Wade'. When he registered for the U.S. Draft in 1917-18, John printed and also signed his middle name as 'Hampton'. When John registered for the U.S. Draft in 1942, his middle names were typed as 'Wade Hammond' and he signed as 'John H. Maphis'.

John married Mary Eva (Beatty) Maphis (15 Sept 1890 - Dec 1983) on 1 Feb 1910 in Hampshire County, West Virginia. She was born in Hampshire County to John Henry Beatty (Jan 1850 - 20 Jan 1908) and Sarah Catherine (Haines) Beatty (born Nov 1854).

In the 1910, 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses, John and Mary were living in Hampshire County, West Virginia.

Mary died in Hampshire County, West Virginia, as 'Eva Maphis'.

John H. Maphis

Romney – John H. Maphis, 79, Romney, died in Hampshire Memorial Hospital Friday.

He was a son of the late William and Sarah (Reed) Maphis, Romney.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Eza (Beatty) Maphis; a daughter, Mrs. Beulah Reynolds, Romney; seven sons, Isaac W., Marvin (Tommy), Dailey L., Garland (Gene) E., and Paul M. Maphis, all of Romney, Allen C. Maphis, Clarksburg, and Robert W. Maphis, Nashville, Tenn.; a brother Isaac N. Maphis, Keyser; and 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The body is at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, where friends will be received today from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Service will be held in Romney Christian Church tomorrow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Raymond Martin officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery near Romney.
