Mahala was the daughter of Wesley A. and Elizabeth M. McDonald. She and her family had migrated to Kansas from Ohio, arriving in Kansas in time for the 1880 census of Coffey County.

Mahala married Isaac Ozburn in Jackson County, Kansas on June 20, 1889. Mahala was his second wife. They had one child during their marriage.

After Isaac's death in 1919, Mahala married widower August Plasmyere on October 17, 1924 in Coffey County. August had immigrated to America from Germany in 1860.
