Mrs. Goddard Dies at 78; Rites Held

Mrs. L.W. Goddard, 78, a resident of this community for 46 years, died in the Emmetsburg hospital Thursday following a serious illness of several weeks. The elderly lady had undergone an appendectomy Dec.12 and due to her age and complications, she failed to regain her strength. A fatal heart attack Thursday, Jan. 4, was the direct cause of her death.

Funeral services were held in the Bethany Lutheran church, with the Methodist minister, Rev. Paul Johnson, officiating Saturday afternoon. Pallbearers were all members of Goddard families and were Clayton, Joseph, Maurice, William, Raymond and Robert Goddard. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery with the Foy Funeral home in charge.

Mrs. Goddard was born Anna Caroline McBride in Boston, Mass. in 1872. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McBride. As a young woman she was married to Lucien Watson Goddard in Emmetsburg in 1891, and the young couple later lived in Illinois before settling permanently in Palo Alto county. The Goddard farm home is about 7 miles northeast of Emmetsburg and is operated by a son Glen, with whom his mother lived. Mr. Goddard, Sr. died a number of years ago.

The couple became the parents of six children [8...did not mention Frank or Ray], Thomas of Streator, Ill., Orville of Emmetsburg, Fred of Laurens, Jesse of Blue Island, Ill., Mildred of Houston, Texas, and Glen of near Emmetsburg. There are 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren surviving. Also surviving are sisters Julia McBride and Ella Goddard.

During her nearly half a century of residence in this community, Mrs. Goddard made many friends by her friendly manner and helpful ways. Her main interest centered about her family, and she was known as a devoted wife and mother. Her passing brought sincere regret to her family and friends.
