As a young man, Robert E. Read served in the United States Naval Reserve Forces before attending Columbia University pre-medical school in New York City. After one year at Columbia, he departed and joined the American Ambulance Field Service. He served as an ambulance driver in France during World War One. For five months in 1917, he dressed the wounds of soldiers and delivered them to hospitals behind the front lines.
On June 13, 1917, Read enlisted in France's Service Aeronautique and attended the aviation and gunnery training pipeline at Avord, Pau, Cazeaux, and the G.D.E. He received his brevet on the Caudron on November 18, 1917, and he graduated from the training pipeline on January 20, 1918.
In Paris on January 24, 1918, Read went back to his roots by crossing over from French aviation into the United States Naval Reserve Flying Corps. On February 20, he was made Naval Aviator #564 (HTA) at Moutchic, France. He served at Dunkirk Naval Air Station at the Front as a pilot and eventually as a commander.
After the World War One, Read was stationed in Washington D.C. He was honorably discharged from the military on January 23, 1922 at the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.
