Fairfield - Joseph J. Downard, 82, first rural mail carrier to carry mail from the Stockport post office died Dec. 29 at 7:15 p.m. at his home at 503 South Fourth Street.

Death was caused by a series of 3 heart attacks all suffered a few hours prior to his death.

A native of Stockport, Downard was the son of Ephriam and Margaret Payne Downard and was born Nov. 9, 1889. On Nov. 10, 1897, he was married to Ingaba Morris at Hillsboro. After living on a farm in the Stockport community for many years,they moved into Fairfield in 1919.

Downard was a member of the Methodist Church.

The widow survives, as do a son, Bruce Downard. San Landro, Calif., and two daughters: Mrs. Joanne Helsabeck, Hollywood, Calif., and Mrs. J.C. Snyder, of Fairfield.

Also surviving are a brother and two sisters: Charles Downard, Van Wert, and Mrs. Mary Mellen and Elizabeth Downard, both of Stockport; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Last rights will be held at the Stockport Methodist church at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Roger Swearingen will officiate, and burial will be in Spencer cemetery. The body is at the Weston Behner funeral home, at Fairfield.
