Fern as she was known and called all her life she was born 6 Sep 1898 in Pullman, Cherry, Nebraska, died 20 Dec 1982 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa, she was married one time. As the story goes Fern met Herman when she was 20 years old and fell in love with him, he married another. After his wife passed away, she met him again and married him when she was 62yrs old. Fern married 1 Jun 1961 in Orange City, Sioux, Iowa to Herman ROWENHORST son of Hein "Henry" and Hettie (WALRAVEN) ROWENHORST.

FERN SMITH ROWENHORST
Mrs. Fern SMITH ROWENHORST, age 84, of Orange City, longtime professor at Northwestern College, passed away Monday, Dec. 20 at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City after a short illness.
Fern was born September 6, 1898, in a sod house in Pullman, Neb., the daughter of Clarence K. SMITH and Emma McADAMS SMITH. At the age of six, her family moved to Grand Junction, Colo., where she attended public school.
In 1919, she received her B.M. degree from Central College, Pella. She did graduate work in music and art at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she completed an art major. Miss SMITH also did choral study at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois; the Fred Waring Workshop, Boulder; and the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
After teaching music for three years at the Carl Hillyer School of Music, Delta, Colorado, she came to Northwestern College, Orange City, in 1928. From 1930 to 1953, she was director of the Northwestern College A Cappella Choir, which appeared in all midwestern Reformed churches and participated in many radio broadcasts. While directing the choir, Miss SMITH taught nearly all the music department's courses at one time or another, including studio lessons in piano and organ.
Fern was appointed the college's first Dean of Women. In 1953, she was asked to establish and build an art department at Northwestern. She continued to teach art and music theory at the college until retiring in 1961.
On June 1, 1961, she married Herman ROWENHORST at Orange City. Mr. ROWENHORST passed away December 18, 1967.
In 1970, Northwestern College honored Mrs. ROWENHORST by naming their new women's dormitory Fern SMITH Hall.
She was an active member of the American Reformed Church and its Women's Guild. She was also a member of Delta Cappa Gama Sorority, Women's Club, Just Another Club, and K K's.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Arie (Leona) VANDER STOEP and Mrs. Clarice FLIKKEMA, both of Orange City; a half brother, John PORTER, of Las Vegas, Nevada; half sister, Mrs. Corene RYAN, of Howell, Michigan; and loving nieces, nephews, and stepchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 23, at the American Reformed Church of Orange City. The Rev. LeRoy NATTRESS and Mr. Peter THEUNE officiated. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home Orange City.

Orange City, Iowa - Special: The south dormitory for girls on the Northwestern College campus will be named FERN SMITH HALL in recognition of the dedicated teaching service to the college by Mrs. Fern SMITH ROWENHORST of Orange City.
Dr. Lars I. GRANBERG, president of Northwestern said a buffet and delication ceremony will be held in the Fern Smith Hall following commencement exercises, June 1, at 10 a.m.
