Orell Dwight Overman, age 97, of Switz City, passed away on Tues., Nov. 25, 2014, at his residence. He was born March 6, 1917, in rural eastern Greene County, the son of William Grant & Artemacia (Whitworth) Overman.

Orell preached in Kentucky at various churches for eighteen years, the last two years being in Mackville from 1952-1954; then he moved to Indiana and served as pastor of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ in Lyons for nearly forty years. During this time, for many years, he preached one Sunday a month at Ellis Church. From the time he began his ministry through the 1960’s, he preached many revivals. Beginning in 1954, he had a twenty-year long radio show with WBTO and with a station in Jacksonville, Florida. He began filling in at Switz City Christian Church following his ministry at Pleasant Grove and later preached at the Jasonville Church of Christ until 2011. He took courses at Baptist Theological Seminary in his early years. Orell, Eugene Pound, and Jim Reintjes all spent a great deal of time building Woodland Bible Camp. He enjoyed spending time on his twenty acres at his home in Switz City.

He is survived by his two daughters, Jean (Dale) McLean of Millersburg, OH and Joyce (Bob) Lyon of Louisville, KY, two sons, Joe (Candy) Overman of Lyons and Jerry (Mary) Overman of Louisville, a daughter-in-law, Sharon Overman of Millersburg, OH, nineteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and five step great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Frances (Deckard) Overman, whom he married June 7, 1940, a son, James Ray Overman, a daughter-in-law, Sally Overman, a granddaughter, Mary Overman Ismael, three brothers, Patrick, Russell, & Lowell Overman, and two sisters, Ella Lynn and Beulah Figg.

Funeral service will be held at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, December 1, 2014, with Buford Smith, Floyd Stone, and Jerry Carmichael officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Lyons.

Visitation will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton on Sunday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., and at the church on Monday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service.
