Obit of Rev. Ephraim Miller - 6 July 1899 Punxsutawney Spirit

Rev. Ephraim Miller, D.D. was born near Mechanicsburg, Pa., on Dec 8, 1818, and lived to the good age of 80 years, 6 months and 25 days. He peacefully fell asleep on Monday afternoon July 2, 1899, in this place at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Woods Beck. He was a graduate from the Lutheran College at Gettysburg, Pa., in 1841. His father died shortly after this and the entire support of his mother and several children depended on him. He went to Hillsboro, Ill., and taught school; while there he studied theology and was licensed to preach in 1845. Oct. 13, 1836 he was married to Mary J. Boone, of Hillsboro, Ill., and on the following Sunday was ordained to the ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, in which he served for more than fifty years. His pastorates were at Springfield, Oregon, Cedarville, Mt. Morris and Dixon, Ill., and at Cincinnatti, Ohio, at Smicksburg, Shrewsburg and Steelton, Pa. For two or three years his home was in Harrisonburg where golden anniversary of his marriage and ordination was commemorated on Oct. 13, 1898. Last fall he came to this place to make his home with his only daughter, and many of our citizens have learned to know him most favorably. He had been feeble for some weeks and recently was attacked with typhoid fever. At his own request he will be buried in Smicksburg. The services will be in charge of Rev's. S. E. Smith, and W. E. Crebbs, of Valier. A brief service at the house at 7 o'clock Wednesday morning, and a later sermon in the Church in Smicksburg.

The children of Ephraim and Mary were: Sarah, William, Mary E., John, Alice E., Walter B., & Charles A.
