William Miller was the second son of Daniel and Elizabeth Miller. When William was in his early teens he developed a cruel inflammation of the spine which after long months of suffering developed into curvature of the spine. Not a hunch in his back, but an abnormally full chest. The suffering had ceased by his 16th birthday. During this time he had manifested such an unusual talent in drawing and painting that he was sent to Philadelphia for the development of that gift. He quickly learned to paint on ivory plates and in a comparatively short time, he was making a fine living as a miniature painter.
