In the mid-1850's, John moved with his family to the area around Starkville, Mississippi and this is where he attended school. On April 26th 1863, John enlisted as a Private in Co. H, 11th Mississippi Cavalry under the command of Col. Robert O. Perrin; where he saw action at the seige of Atlanta and the Carolina Campaigns. He surrended with his company on May 6th 1865.
In 1872, John Gaston married his distant cousin, Imogene "Emma" Gaston, daughter of Elihu Bay Gaston and the former Clarissa E. Love; with whom he had two known children:
Charles Ewing (1874-1931)
Everlyn Blanche (1878-1958)
John & Emma lived in Meridian were John owned a Dry Goods business.
