Joseph Fleming Gaston, the sixth of seven sons of Ebenezer Gaston, III and the former Margaret Caroline Fox, was born March 3rd 1858 in the bounds of Starkville in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. His father was a descendant of French Huguenots that came to America prior to the revolution and helped win its freedom for independence. His father would serve alongside his grandfather in the 11th Mississippi Cavalry under the command of Col. Robert O. Perrin during the Civil War.

After the war, Joseph Gaston moved to Enterprise in Clarke County, Mississippi; where he clerked in a store and then on to Corsicana, Texas to pursued a business career. In 1890, Joseph married Miss Lula Lee Johnson, a daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Samuel John Thomas Johnson of Corsicana, Texas.

Joseph and Lula Gaston would be blessed with the following known children:
Joseph Johnson (1891-1973)
Alan Lee (1893-1894)

After living in Tyler, Texas for a number of years, Joseph Gaston moved to Vinita in Craig County, Oklahoma and owned a hotel. Here he departed this life on May 2nd 1926 at the age of 68. He was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery.
