Her parents were both born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Her father once served as a British soldier guarding the Emperor Napoleon in his exile at St. Helena. Her parents were married at Foveran, Aberdeenshire in 1834, and about 1836 came to live at Winterbourne, Woolwich township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada where Charlotte was born.
About 1843 her father obtained land in Peel township, Wellington County, where they lived at lot 21, concession 13, just outside of Alma, Ontario.
She married John Mathieson in 1859. He worked as a farm labourer for many years, mainly in southern Ontario.
In 1881 they moved to Minnesota where they acquired farmland at Hallock. They spent the next 15 years at Hallock.
About 1908 her husband retired and they returned to Canada to live at Brandon, Manitoba.
