He came with his family from Scotland to Ontario, Canada about 1854. They settled at Woolwich township in Waterloo County.
In 1859 he married Charlotte Harvey who was born in Woolwich township.
Based on the birth places of his children, he and his wife lived for a few years in Waterloo county, and then during about the next 15 years lived in several towns in southern Ontario (for example Zorra, Stratford and Clinton) where he worked as a farm labourer and foreman of a flax mill.
Early in 1881 he was working as a hotel clerk in Northern Ontario and later on that year obtained land and settled at Hallock, Minnesota.
They farmed in Minnesota for the next roughly 15 years and then he retired and they came to live at Brandon, Manitoba about 1908.
