Leo was born Aug. 10, 1917 in Marcellus, N.Y., son of the late Edward and Caroline Fraylenger Hayes. On Sept. 6, 1941, he married the former Laura Ashby in Marcellus, N.Y. The couple moved to Valders in 1959 when Leo became plant manager of Allen V. Smith, and was later employed by Manitowoc Engineering until his retirement in 1981. Leo was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
Survivors include his wife: Laura Hayes, Valders; two daughters and two sons-in-law: Marie Elaine and Roy Fukumoto; Kathleen Dawn and Thomas Koyen; one son and one daughter-in-law: Michael Edward and Alyce Hayes; one granddaughter: Laurie; four stepgrandsons: Joshua, Todd, Joey and Chuckie; two brothers and three sisters-in-law: Donald and Patricia Hayes; David and Virginia Hayes; Rosemary Hayes; four sisters and three brothers-in-law: Katherine and Joseph Manupella; Mary Linda and Paul McCleery; Eileen and Robert Kranz; and Veronica Kirchoff. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
He was also preceded in death by one grandson: Dylan Hayes; one great-grandson: Ryan Fukumoto; three brothers: Jack, James and William; five sisters: Theresa Hayes; Rita Mauer; Jean Kane; Joan Hayes; and Sister Margaret Daniel.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at Christianson & Deja Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Valders. Private funeral services for Leo E. (Perry) Hayes, age 86, of 335 N. Jackson St., Valders, who died Monday evening, Sept. 15, 2003 at his residence will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at Knollwood Mausoleum Chapel, Hwy. 310, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. James Jugenheimer.
