Several censuses say Emerilla was born at sea or on the Atlantic Ocean. Her death record says she was born 24 Jun 1863. The year is almost certainly wrong. She was probably born in 1867 in Wayne County, NY where her father is known to have lived for a while after his Civil War discharge. However, the Farnsworth family moved back and forth from NY to Canada, probably across Lake Ontario, so she might have been born during a lake crossing. Her parents and sister Julia moved from Wayne County, NY to Marion Township, Sanilac County, MI by the 1870 census.

Emerilla married Silas Hill Palmatier in Logan Township, Ogemaw County, MI 15 Dec 1889. The ceremony was performed by her maternal cousin Melissa Farnsworth's husband, i.e., John W. Sullivan. Apparently several members of Emerilla's extended family were working there in a lumber camp. Emerilla and Silas are reputed to have had 16 children of whom 8 were living at the time of the 1910 census. Several of their children are buried in her parents' lot in Downing Cemetery, Sanilac County Michigan.

Over they years the family moved fairly often. They lived in Cheboygan, Iosco, Sanilac, Genesee, and Tuscola Counties. Apparently they eventually moved to Jackson, Jackson County, MI where Silas is buried.

Emerilla remarried DeForest Legg sometime before the 1940 census where they are found living in Jackson. She was buried 27 Oct 1941 next to Silas in the lot she purchased when he died.
