"John Farnsworth died at his home in Deckerville Mich., April 1, aged 72 years. Mr. Farnsworth was a former Arcadia man; a member of Co. F 2 NY Mounted Rifles during the war. After the war Mr. Farnsworth returned to Newark for a while and then went west. He was a guest of his relatives here last summer and of S. B. Van Duser, of whom he was a comrade during the war. He had many friends among the old soldiers. Thomas Farnsworth, now of this town, is a brother of the deceased."

Note: Arcadia is a town(ship) in Wayne County, New York where John lived for a while before he "went west." At that time, Michigan was considered to be "the west."

The brother Thomas Farnsworth mentioned in the obituary is actually a half brother. John and Thomas had the same mother (Susan Fisher), but different fathers. Susan Fisher first married George Farnsworth who was John W. Farnsworth's Father. After George died, Susan married George Farnsworth's nephew, Wright Farnsworth (1822-1899). Wright was a son of George's brother Joseph Farnsworth and his wife, Sarah Dawson.

1835 John and his brother William are to live with Wright Farnsworth and Susan Fisher In New York State, His real father is Geo Farnsworth,Mother is believed to be Ann Wilward,his death cer shown Geo /mother unk of England.

1850-60 John worked in the lumber business( possibly in New York and Canada before Civil War) and in the thumb area of Michigan, mostly Deckerville, Sanilac Co and Port Huron , St. Clair, Co of Michigan, and was known to have other relations in the business from New York to Chicago, Ill. and Canada. He was raised in New York lived in 1850 Farmington, Ontario, New York,
1863 When Civil War came he mustered in at Palmyra, New York; 2nd NY Mounted Rifles, Co F.; on 24 Dec 1863. mustered out 10 Aug,1865 at Petersburg, Va.
Wright (Yankee) his brother was listed in the 97th Ny Infantry, but was sent home by Dec 1862

1866, On the 12th of April 1866, John married Rose Anna in Oxford,Ontario,Canada in a double wedding ceremony, along with his brother, Wright Farnsworth,Jr and Rebecca Perry at the home of his Uncle Thomas.(Thomas Farnsworth b.1822 and Pheobe Hyland) Rosanna Farnsworth b.1847 in New York.

1870 John and Roseanna came to Michigan to raise a family and continue life.
1876 John got his veterans land grant from the US Government of 40 acres, which he built his home on.

1894 he had acquired a plot across the street and just west of 80 acres, and had family moving around him everywhere. J.D. Farnsworth, and Geo Farnsworth would have neighboring farms.

John at one point in time, He was owner of the Union Hotel in Deckerville, located on Main Street between Mortney's and Russells. The Union Hotel was said to be of high quality and served the most excellent meals for any of the Hotels in Deckerville.( this taken from book, Trodden Pathways, History of Deckerville, Mi. Sanilac Co. It was later purchased by John Bowerman & Arthur Hartshorn, probably after April 1, 1906 when John passed away. When the name was changed to Bowerman Hartshorn Hotel.

1906 Deckerville Hotel had burned down, John fought the fire with all the men of town, he must have gotten smoke inhalation, he died from induced bronchitis.

They would have 15 children of which only 7 would be living in 1906 at the time of his death.( Julia A , John A, Fanny M., Sarah M., David B., Robert,for sure),(Marilla (aka Addie) or Edna M. were living in 1906) He was a active Mason, and a active member of Grand Army of the Republic. ,

A blank headstone labelled FATHER is to the right of Roseann's stone. This probably marks where John W. is buried. It is barely legible.
