John Williams, of Richland township, enlisted November 14th, 1861, at Peoria, Illinois, and was enrolled as a private in Co. C, 11th regiment Illinois Cavalry, better known as Col. Robert C. Ingersoll's regiment; served in the army of the Cumberland and took part in the battles of Shioh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Jackson, Mississippi;and many minor engagements, was honorably discharged as a corporal at Memphis, Tennessee, after having served nearly three years.
