Mary E. Lindsey
Fairbanks resident Mary Elizabeth Lindsey, 85, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at the Country Estates Home in Fairbanks.
Born in Knox County, Mo., on Nov. 30, 1918, she was the daughter of Patrick Henry and Josephine (Weber) Gibbons. She was united in marriage to Samuel Guy Lindsey, who preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1966.
Mary was baptized into the Catholic faith at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, Mo. She was a graduate of St. Joseph High School and attended the Kirksville State Teachers College in Kirksville, Mo.
She also attended the University of Alaska, where she received her bachelor's degree in 1966. Mary taught nearly 10 years in Missouri rural schools including Fruit Hill, Coe, Rourke, Beal and Plevna. In 1959, she and her husband, Guy moved to Alaska where they homesteaded and built a log home. The Lindseys were referred to in a book about homesteading in Alaska titled "Anders of Two Rivers" written by Joyce Anders.
On Nov. 8, 1981, their home burned; Mary built a new home, which she moved into on July 27, 1982. Mary and Guy were owners of a sawmill and logging operation which she sold in 1974.
Mary was a teacher and principal in Alaska nearly 20 years at Two Rivers Elementary School, retiring in the 1990s.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sister, Rose Ann Pfeifer; and brother, Francis Gibbons.
She is survived by her sister, Ella Mae Gibbons Fisher of Knox City, Mo.; brothers, Paul Gibbons of Fairbanks and Charles and Pat Gibbons, both of Edina, Mo.; 29 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and a very special cat.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, at the St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery in Edina. Her cremains will be laid to rest next to her husband, Guy.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery for cemetery maintenance. The memorials may be mailed to Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
