Edward W. Matthias, age 87, of 10421 English Lake Road, Manitowoc, died peacefully in the arms of his Savior surrounded by his family on Monday morning, February 6, 2012 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.
Ed was born on February 27, 1924 in the town of Liberty, Manitowoc County. He was the son of the late William and Marie Clasen Matthias. Ed was a graduate of Valders High School with the class of 1942. He farmed on the home farm on English Lake Road until 1988. Ed also drove school bus for the Valders School District for 25 years. He served as the sexton and secretary at Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery for many years. On September 4, 1948 he married Janet I. Glaeser at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church where he was a life long member also being baptized and confirmed there. Ed also served on the church council, school board, cemetery committee and the Men's Club of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church. He had also been the leader of the 4-H Webster Workers in the town of Liberty.
Ed loved the Green Bay Packers, Manitowoc Lutheran High School Lancers and Valders High School Vikings but most of all he loved his family and his Savior Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years: Janet; five sons and four daughters-in-law: Bruce and Lorna Matthias, town of Liberty; Anthony Matthias, rural Kiel; David and Roxanne Matthias, Stevens point, WI; Mark and Mary Matthias, Manitowoc; Lee and Jeanne Matthias, Manitowoc; one daughter: Ellen Richardson, Manitowoc; three sisters: Lorraine Ewald, Manitowoc; Eline Glaeser, Manitowoc; Bernett Lorfeld, Valders; eleven grandchildren: Stuart (Jane) Matthias, Aaron (Amy) Matthias, Eric (Sarah) Matthias, Joanna (Benjamin) Huegel, Laura Richardson, Kali Jo Matthias, Kaleb Matthias, Ryan (Angie) Matthias, Luke (Kristin) Matthias, Sarah Matthias, Megan Matthias; fourteen great grandchildren, one sister-in-law: Gladys Matthias, Madison, WI; two brothers-in-law: Rodney (Barbara) Glaeser, Fond du Lac, WI; John Glaeser, Manitowoc; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Arland (Irene) Matthias and Vilas Matthias; son-in-law: Robert Richardson Jr.; three brothers-in-law: Armin Ewald, Robert Lorfeld and Robert Glaeser.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Trinity Ev. Lutzheran Church, 11303 Wehausen Road, town of Liberty with Rev. Gregory Pope officiating. Burial will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery following the church services. Relatives and friends may call at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials would be appreciated to Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church or Manitowoc Lutheran High School. The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory, North 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
