James Shotwell, a well known farmer of Union township, met a tragic death the past week. He was in the barn Friday evening without a lantern and mistaking a wrong door for the right one, opened it and fell eight feet, striking a bare place and breaking his hip and wrist bones and mashing one side of his face. He was removed to the house where he lingered until Saturday at 8 o'clock when he passed away. During the latter hours he was unconscious. Remains were interred in the Carrollton Cemetery Tuesday, friends meeting at the house at ten o'clock.
Mr. Shotwell was married October 30, 1860, nearly fifty years ago, and it had been the intention of the family to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary had their parents lived until that time. His wife, who survives, was Miss Mary A. McCray, and to them were born nine children -- two sons and seven daughters. All are living except one daughter, Mary A. The others are Winfield S. Shotwell, Mrs. Thomas J. Davis, Mrs. Ella Rutledge, John W., Mrs. Bertha Smeltz, Mrs. Anna Herron, and Sadie and Edna. There are 22 grandchildren, one of whom lived with the grandparents. Also, the following brothers and sisters; Samuel G., Thomas W., Mrs. Will Long, Sarah Jane Snyder of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mrs. John M. Buxton, Mrs. Will Clemens, and William, who lived with the deceased.
Mr. Shotwell was born May 6, 1837, at Rockford, Tuscarawas County, but has spent nearly all his life in the vicinity. He united with the M. P. Church in 1860 and remained a consistent member.
