He was born at Roxford, Tuscarawas County, a son of Jacob and Mary Shotwell, who later settled in Carroll County on the farm now occupied by H. A. Long, Union Twp., where he was reared.
He was married December 13, 1888, to Angeline E. Hanlin, at Washington, Pennsylvania.
In his early life he was a farmer and later became a carpenter and contractor. He moved December, 1904, from the home farm to Carrollton, where he followed contracting with considerable success, building many houses around town. For a short time he was engaged in the tinning and roofing business in the room now occupied by the post office. He was nominated for county commissioner by the republicans in 1910 and was elected that fall and re-elected in 1912. He served two terms with credit to himself and satisfaction to the public, being noted for his progressive and constructive policy in keeping with an efficient economy. During the World War he gave two of his sons, Frank, who was attached to the personnel department, and Grant, who was with the engineering department in France.
Mrs. Shotwell survives with the following children; Frank, chief clerk in the American railway express office of the Stark County engineer; Sam, in charge of the express office at Carrollton, and Miss Florence, of the home. He was one of nine children, the living being Thomas W. Shotwell, of Perry Twp.; Mrs. Nancy Long, of Union Twp., and Mrs. John Buxton, of Canton.
Burial will be Friday afternoon in Grandview cemetery. Funeral services will be conducted in the home at 1:30 by the pastor, Rev. John H. Butler, of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
