Betty Ruth Wood, 90, of Shawnee, KS, formerly of Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Overland Park Regional Hospital, Overland Park, KS.
Funeral service will be held 1:00 PM. Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Monticello United Methodist Church, 23860 W 75th ST, Shawnee, KS 66227, with Rev. Robert Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the Doniphan Cemetery, Doniphan, KS. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at the church. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Monticello United Methodist Church or The House on the Rock Ministries and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.
Betty was born December 2, 1923 in Doniphan, KS the daughter of John and Belle (Moppin) Hale. She grew up in the Doniphan area and attended school through the tenth grade. She met and married Michael "Guss" Wood who was a longtime Atchison Police Chief. They were married in Atchison at the parsonage of the Christian Church on December 16, 1939. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1997, after fifty-eight years of wedded bliss. Betty took great pride in being a wonderful wife, home maker and mother. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church in Shawnee, KS, and a past member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, Atchison, KS; she was an active member in both. Among her other interests were playing cards, reading, writing poems, crossword puzzles, crocheting and embroidery.
Surviving Betty are her two children; Michael and his wife Anna of Shawnee, KS and Debbie and her husband John Kiehl of Nixa, MO, grandchildren; Theresa (Michael) Murray, Shawnee, KS, Carla (Chad) Jackson, Tallahassee, FL, Justin (Brittany) Kiehl, Montrose, CO, Shauna Kiehl, Nixa, MO, great grandchildren; Morgan Murray, Emily, Heather, Greg Jackson; Jordyn and Macy Kiehl.
Preceding her in death are her parents and brothers John, Ernest, Arthur, Walter, Robert, Woodrow, Oren, Oley, Keith, Nathan and her sisters Opal, Eva and Rosie.
