Mrs. Maria Lizzie Belle Hale, 71, Doniphan, widow of the late John Hale, died yesterday morning at the Atchison Hospital, where she had been a patient nine weeks. She had been bed fast since last January.
Funeral services will be tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Stanton chapel with the Rev. Harold Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Doniphan Cemetery.
Mrs. Hale was born August 20, 1884, a daughter of Jesse and Alice Moppin at Troy. She and John F. Hale were married at Troy Feb. 6, 1900 and began housekeeping there.
They lived several years at Hill City, Kas. and moved to Doniphan in 1918. For several years, Mr. Hale operated a fruit and vegetable market on North Eighth street and for a time was associated with the Globe Market on South fifth street.
Mr. Hale died in 1938. Since then Mrs. Hale continued to live at the family home at Doniphan with her son, Arthur Hale. During her illness she spent part of the time at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Guss Wood , in Atchison.
Mr. and Mrs. Hale were parents of 17 children, 12 of them surviving. She was proud of the fact her nine boys formed the Hale Brothers ball team which played for a time at Doniphan.
She was a member of the Atchison Christian Church, and was devoted to her large family. She insisted that her children receive good educations and emphasized to them the importance of making good grades.
Her sons and daughters, as well as sons and daughters-in-laws, were devoted to her and provided her with the best of care during her illness.
Surviving are Arthur of the home, Orean and Mrs. Guss, Betty Wood, Atchison, Robert, Wichita, Woodrow, Sedgwick, John, Augusta, Keith, Mulvane, Mrs. Ivyal (Eva) Cotter, Easton, Kas., Mrs. Marshall (Opal) Echols, Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Ralph (Rose) Dalrymple, Kansas City, Kas., Oley, Paradise Calif., and Nathan, Englewood, Colo.
She is also survived by four brothers, Jesse Moppin, Leavenworth, George Moppin, Henrietta, Mo., Lloyd Moppin, Troy, and Wesley Moppin, Tucson, Ariz. a sister, Sister Mary Annela, St. Louis, 31 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Five children preceded her in death. Ernest was killed by lightning in 1921 at the age of 21. Walter died from a heart attack at the age of 44, and three others died in infancy.
