Tuesday's Dodge city Daily Globe contained an account of the death by lightning of Ernest Hale of near Doniphan, as follows: "The body of Ernest Hale, 19, of Doniphan, Kansas, who was killed by a bolt of lightning while working in the Harvest field on J.W. Etherton farm east of Dodge City, Monday afternoon, is to be taken this evening to Doniphan for burial. John Hale, father of the stricken lad, and Wesley Moppins, an uncle, arrived from Doniphan this morning to accompany the body home. Ernest Hale was one of twelve children of Mr. Hale who is the father of nine other boys and two girls. He left home some time ago to work in the harvest fields of Kansas and Missouri. After finishing harvest work in southern Missouri he came with several other young men to Hutchinson about June 14, and from there went to Pleva to begin work June 15. After nine days there, they came to Dodge City and since that time have been working on various farms in the vicinity. The boy was working on a barge when a small cloud which had caused a slight shower loosed a bolt of lightning which struck him causing instant death, as well as the death of the horse on the barge. The top of a straw hat he was wearing was torn away, and both shoulders were badly burned, and the bolt continued down the front of the body to the feet, following the eyes of one of his shoes, and practically burning the shoe from the foot. None of the burns were deep, but he apparently died instantly. Ernest Hale was a boy of good habits and was well liked by all who learned to know him. His grief-stricken parents and their family have the sympathy of this community in their loss
