WORLD WAR I VET DIES

John F. Hess, 80, of 31 Main Street, Highland, Freeland RD, died at 7:40 pm Monday at the Hazleton State General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Upper Lehigh a son of the late John and Alice(Hinkle) Hess and had resided on the north side his entire life.

Prior to his retirement he was employed by the Jeddo-Highland Coal Company.

He was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Freeland, UMW Local 7895 and American Legion Post 473, Freeland. He was an Army veteran of World War I.

Surviving are his wife, the former Rose Sabol; daughter, Mrs. Rosemarie Groth, Matawan, N. J., sons John, Drifton and Edward, Freeland, seven grandchildren, sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Anna) Davis, Freeland; Mrs. Alice Rehn, Hazleton and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 2 pm Thursday from the Cotterall Funeral Home, Birkbeck St. Freeland, with the Rev. William W. Fairchild Jr. officiating. Interment will be made in the Freeland Cemetery.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm Wednesday.

Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 473 of Freeland.
