John C. Hess, 87, of Freeland passed away Thursday evening in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

Born in Highland, he was the son of the late John and Rose (Sabol) Hess, and was the last surviving member of his parents and siblings.

John honorably served in the U.S. Navy and was discharged on Sept. 30, 1959. He retired after 30 years of employment as a set-up man for All Steel Corp., West Hazleton. In his younger days, he hunted and fished, but, young or old, he always maintained a passion for cars and gardening.

John was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish at St. Ann's Church, Freeland, the American Legion Post 473, and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5010.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were a daughter, Jodi Drauschak; a brother, Edward Hess; and a sister, Rose Marie Groth.

Surviving are his wife, the former Loretta Maranki, at home, with whom he celebrated a 60th wedding anniversary on June 17; a son, John C. Hess and his wife, Jackie, Seaford, Va.; a son-in-law, John Drauschak, Freeland; grandchildren, Sophia Hess, Layla Hess and Zoey Hess, all of Virginia; and Jared Drauschak, Freeland; a great-grandchild, Lianna Drauschak, Berwick; and many nieces and nephews.
