George, one of the most substantial and prominent farmers in this vicinty, died at his home three miles south of town on Tuesday morning about 10 o'clock from Bright's disease. He had been quite healthy up to two years ago when he had a stroke of apoplexy. Last May, he began to fail and from that time on has been gradually growing worse until death called him Home.
George was born at Bury St. Edmunds, County Suffolk, England, on December 10, 1835. He came to America when 18 years of age and located in Chicago, Illinois with his father and brother. He was married to Miss Sarah Burkett at Janesville, Wisconsin, about 44 years ago. They came to Minnesota in June of 1857 and has lived in this vicinity ever since. To George and Sarah Goldsmith were born 13 children of whom 11 are still living at the time of his death. Urban G., of this city; Mrs. Dave Bernard, Jr., Mrs. John Bernard and Mrs. Dave Bernard, Sr., living near Pleasant Grove; Mrs. Samuel Hanley, of Jordan township; Dick G., Mrs. James Hanley and Mrs. Thomas Gray living near the old homestead; Mrs. Fred Hanley, of Aldon, Iowa; and Dave G., and John living at home. Besides a wife and children, he leaves 32 grandchildren.
George was a genial, pleasant gentleman and leaves hosts of friends. He was very ambitious and has accumulated much real estate. The bereaved wife and family have the deep sympathy of their numerous friends. He was a member of Meridian Lodge, North Star R. A. Chapter, Eastern Star and Odd Fellow orders and took a great interest in each. The funeral was held from the house yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and was under Masonic auspices, the Rev. B. C. Gillis officiating, interment in Chatfield cemetery.
