From Hazleton PA Plain Speaker, Tues. June 1, 1937: In ill health but determined to reach Maple Hill cemetery, Wilkes-Barre, to place flowers on the grave of her son, George, Mrs. Edward Shafer, 70, of Ashley, formerly of Freeland, was stricken with a heart attack while en route.

She was removed to the office of Dr. B. Irvin Evans, North Main street, where she died a few minutes later. Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Lewis, also two brothers, Philip Kloss, of Philadelphia and
George Kloss of Ashley and a twin sister, Mrs. Thomas Briggs, of Freeland, and another sister, Mrs. Robert Howey of Freeland. A grandson, Thomas Lewis, and a great granddaughter, Muriel Lewis, both of Ashley, also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the family residence. Rev. M. Hunter Reid of Glenburn, former pastor of Ashley M.E. church and Rev. Richard J. Davey, present pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Hill cemetery.
