Eldred LeRoy Brandt was born November 23, 1925 to Henry and Mary (Hartjen) Brandt on the family farm in Enterprise Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. Bud attended school in District #20, Jackson County for eight years. He then worked at home, dug tile ditch, worked for Rudy Schoewe and then started his farming career. During this time he enjoyed playing fast pitch softball for Alpha. He was united in marriage to Shirley Bergmeier on February 3, 1950 in Triumph, Minnesota. To this union two sons were born, Brian and Kevin. The family then moved to a farm in Waverly Township where he began his career as a “sheep man” raising and showing sheep-Suffolk, Dorset and Oxford. In 1974, the family moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where Bud worked as a Shepherd in the sheep department at North Dakota State University, a job he was very proud of and loved. Shirley died on May 7, 1977. Bud then bought an acreage near Trimont in 1978 and began to raise purebred Suffolk sheep. On April 7, 1979 he was united in marriage to Carol “Holtz” Bettin in Trimont, Minnesota and was blessed with three more children, Dan, Kala, and Beth Bettin. Bud served as a Rural Mail Sub Carrier in the Trimont Postal System from 1986 to 2006. In 1991, Carol and Bud retired in Trimont. Bud was active in and held many offices in his church, was Director of Martin County Ag Society, 4-H leader, Martin County West FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer, and respected throughout the sheep industry.
