Merva N. Carlson, 78, formerly of Watertown, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, in a living center at Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer at Watertown with the Rev. Tom Christenson officiating. Music will be provided by organist A.J. Sherrill and a barbershop quartet.

Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the nurses at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System and Erland and Sandy Carlson. Active pallbearers will be Matt Frederick, Luke Frederick, Trevor Ahrendt, Christina Ahrendt, Nolan Ahrendt and Bob Bonasera.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Wight, Comes and Sogn Funeral Chapel at Watertown and will continue Thursday prior to the services in the church.

Memorials may be designated to Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer Building Fund or the Prairie Creek Prayer Garden.

Merva N. Carlson was born June 21, 1930, in Enterprise Township, Jackson County, Alpha, Minn., to Henry H. and Mary (Hartjen) Brandt. She attended school in District 20 in Alpha and graduated in 1948 from Jackson (Minn.) High School. She attended nurses training at Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis and graduated as a diploma registered nurse in June of 1951.

She married Robert C. Carlson Sept. 1, 1951, at Trimont, Minn. She worked at the Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis until her husband was transferred to Watertown in June of 1952. She worked at Memorial Hospital until 1986 and after consolidation at Prairie Lakes Hospital, holding different nursing positions until retiring in 1998.

She was a member of the American Nurses Association and District 11 S.D. Nurses Association, served as secretary and treasurer and was selected as the District Nurse of the Year in 1990. She was a former member of the Grace Lutheran Church, sang in the senior choir for several years, was active in the Stephen Ministry Program and the Friendly Visitor Program. She was an active member of the Glacial Lakes Genealogical Society and spent many hours researching and cataloging rural Codington County cemeteries.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Sioux Falls; her daughters, Debra (Doug) Frederick of Sioux Falls and Anita A. (Randy) Ahrendt of Mitchell; her siblings, Hilbert (Norma) Brandt of Alpha, Evelyn Casey of Mankato, Minn., Vera (Laverle) Brack of Mankato, Eldred (Carol) Brandt of Trimont and Vyrn (Agnes) Brandt of Worthington, Minn.; her brother-in-law, Norman Shorts Sr. of Mountain Home, Idaho; and five grandchildren.
