s/o of Willard Richard Smith Florence Grant

Briant Grant Smith 1916 ~ 2006 Briant Grant Smith passed away from complications due to Alzheimer's disease on January 6, 2006. He was born on December 15, 1916 in Salt Lake City to Willard Richards and Florence Grant Smith. He married the girl next door, Cecile Eileen Jackson, on March 16, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a kind, devoted and loving husband and father, and was adored and admired in return by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As an infant, Briant was named and blessed by his paternal grandfather, Joseph F. Smith. He graduated from West High School and the University of Utah. Between his high school graduation and mission call, he had the remarkable opportunity to serve as a secretary and chauffeur for his maternal grandfather, Heber J. Grant. A faithful member of the LDS Church, Briant served a mission to Germany from 1937 to 1939. Because of his fluent German speaking abilities, he was transferred from being a forward observer for an artillery unit, was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant, and became a translator and interrogator serving in Eisenhower's forward headquarters. At the end of the war, he assisted in the translation of the documents of surrender from English to German. Briant always felt that his life had been miraculously spared during the war with this promotion, due to the language skills he had learned as a missionary. In gratitude for this great blessing, he devoted his life to his God and faith. He served as Bishop of the Ensign First Ward, High Counselor in the Ensign Stake and in many other church related callings and capacities throughout his life. Briant's faith and devotion were evidenced when he left to serve as the Mission President of the Austria Vienna Mission (1979-1982) just days after the unexpected death of his daughter, Rosemary S. Higgs. He was well loved by the elders, sisters and members with whom he served. He presided over the Ensign Stake Records Extraction Program and volunteered at the Church Auditing Dept. for over 15 years. Briant is survived by his children, Suzanne S. and J. Stephen L. Jones, Sue A. and Lynn B. Higgs, Briant J. and Susan G. Smith, and Christine S. and Stanley D. Rasmussen, by his 17 grandchildren and their spouses, and by the 14 great-grandchildren that he loved. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cecile. The family wishes to offer heartfelt thanks to Debbie Cope and her colleagues of Hospice for Utah for the capable and tender care they gave to their Father in his final days, and also to thank Dr. Cherie Brunker and Kip DeWeese for their thoughtful and gentle care. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2006, at the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street, Salt Lake City, Utah at 11:00 am. Friends may call Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and one hour prior to services at the Stake Center. Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery.
