A native of Salt Lake City, Lieutenant Smith was born December 23, 1918. He attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. He was in France at the outbreak of the present war serving on a mission for the LDS church, and on being recalled completed his work in Canada. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was sworn in at Fort Douglas January 13, 1942. He was first sent to March Field, Cal., and received further training at Garner Field, Texas. He was commissioned and awarded his wings at Ellington Field, Texas, on April 22, 1943. After supplementary training at Alamogordo N. M., Lieutenant Smith was assigned to duty in England in August, 1943.
In addition to his parents and grandfather, Lieutenant Smith is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Lieutenant Briant G. Smith, Camp Maxey, Texas; Storekeeper Third Class Richard G. Smith, U. S. Navy; Paul G. Smith, naval reserve; Willard G. Smith, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Florence S. Jacobson, Salt Lake City and Mrs. Sarah S. Tanner, Los Angeles.
