Florence Grant Smith, age 94, third daughter of Lucy Stringham and President Heber J. Grant, passed away March 6, 1977 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard R. Smith, son of President Joseph F. Smith. She was a member of the Ensign 5th Ward at the time of her death.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Wallace F. (Frances) Bennett, and one hundred and four living descendants; seven of her eight children, Willard G. smith, Provo, Utah; Mrs. Ted C. (Florence) Jacobsen, Richards G. Smith, Bryant G. Smith, Howard G. Smith, all Salt Lake City; Mrs. Henry M. (Sarah Ellen) Tanner, Miami, Florida; Paul G. Smith, Orem, Utah; forty-seven grandchildren; forty-three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Heber Joseph Smith who lost his life in World War II; two grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Buist Smith.
When she was nine years of age, her mother passed away, and she and her sisters were reared by her grandmother, Rachel Ridgeway Ivans Grant, who was her ideal. She was educated in the Salt Lake City schools, and at 12 years of age, studied art under John Haten, who recognized her special artistic talents. She also studied at the New York Institute of Art, and upon her return to Salt Lake, opened a studio, and married Willard R. Smith in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, February 3, 1909. She was an active LDS Church member, and served in the Ensign Ward and Stake Relief Societies in various capacities. She also served on the Relief Society General Board from 1946 to 1949. She had a lovely singing voice and with her sisters, often sang at various occasions. She served as matron of the Salt Lake Temple from 1963 to 1968, when her husband served as Temple President.
