JOHN MAX SEUSS
By Granddaughter Mitzi Seuss Butler 1997
John Max Seuss was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. He was the third child of John (Johann) and Eva Barbara (Walter) Seuss. It is unclear whether John or his sister, Louise, was the first of the family to come to California. Edith Anderson Briel (John's sister-in -law, age 94) remembered that he came to San Diego, California for a specific job in 1914, although she did not remember exactly what that job was. The first person he met when he got off the train was Lois Shaw, who worked at Sullivan's Grocery Store at the corner of Columbia and Broadway. John came into the store to ask directions for wherever he was going. Lois introduced John to her good friend, Alice Anderson (Edith's sister) at some point after that.

John Max Seuss worked as a chauffeur for the San Diego City Manager and then for Mayor Wilde, driving his car, the "Gray Goose". He transferred to the San Diego City Shops and worked his way up to the head of the Shops.

John dated Alice for seven or eight years. Alice didn't want to leave her mother, but John finally convinced Alice to marry him, and they were wed on June 15, 1921. Their only son, John Anderson Seuss was born October 29, 1923.

John smoked an occasional cigar and liked to fish, although as his granddaughter, I can't remember him doing too much of that. I think John, like his father, was not too fond of children. I don't think he liked us hanging on him too much.

He was a very finicky person. Everything had to be "just right". He was very reserved and I can remember my dad, John Anderson Seuss, teasing him, trying to get a reaction from him. I don't think he was ever too successful.

We are very thankful for all of the home movies, slides and pictures that he took, as they are priceless memories of our family. And of course he would never allow anyone but himself to use the camera.
