Johan (John) was born in Rothenbach, Bayern, Germany to Lorenz and Christianna Seuss* and immigrated to the United States, arriving on February 28, 1884 aboard the ship Hohenstaufen.

John first went to Jefferson, Jefferson County, Wisconsin where he met Eva Barbara Walter. They were married in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Jefferson, Wisconsin on August 19, 1884. Their first child, George John Seuss was born on February 6, 1885 and the young family then moved to South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana where they had six more children. John worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company in South Bend for many years.

John and Eva moved to California in 1919, first going to San Diego for a few years and eventually moving to Los Angeles, where they lived until their deaths.

JOHN SEUSS, SR.
John Seuss, Sr., aged 85, father of George Seuss, 609 South 25th Street, died at his home in Los Angeles, California, this morning after an illness of one year.

He was born in Germany, June 3,1859, and came to South Bend from Germany 60 years ago. He went to California 28 years ago. He is survived by his widow, Eva; one daughter, Mrs. Louise Moose, of Los Angeles; four other sons, John, Jr., of San Diego, California; Martin, Edward and Christopher, all of Los Angeles.

Funeral services and burial will be in Los Angeles.
