Thomas was the son of Belle Cavanagh & James Hanlon. James Hanlon and his family were part of the Peter Robinson assisted immigration of Ontario in 1825. The family settled Con 8 lot 30 of Otonabee Township.. The Peter Robinson Papers record the family as the Handlow or Handlan family who crossed the Atlantic on the Regulus in May 1825.

The date and circumstances of Thomas' death are lost in history, but he was no longer on any records by at least 1871 when his wife is listed as a widow. He may have died well before the 1870s. There has been no record found of his resting place so it is probable that he was simply buried near his parents on the family homestead.
