Johnnie then married Flora Bell Lewis Harris on October 26, 1962, in Los Angeles, California.

He shared childhood memories with fourteen siblings.

Johnnie died on May 10, 1981, in Compton, California, at the age of 55.

Preceded Johnnie in death were his parents John Robert Harris and Rosella Willis Harris; siblings: Elenna Howard, Eddie Harris and Ramie Rebecca Anderson.
