Born in 1775 Virginia.
Married James Hougland about 8-15 years her junior in Nelson County, Kentucky in 1807 (unsourced).
Actually married 1805 in Shelby County, Kentucky, according to her divorce papers.
Her sisters were married in 1806 and 1807 except for one in Nelson County.
James wrote his will on the 19th July 1842 in Vincennes, Indiana.
She filed for divorce in Boonville on 17 February 1846.
"For may it please your honors not content with abusing her and restraining her from Religion and other privileges with charging him with adultery, with breaking up the family, with making no provision for your Petitioner now almost in distress with having created by his threats, fears and apprehensions of great bodily harm ---- all which she charges are true and susceptible of proof ----- She further charges that he has declared to her that he intended to leave her & take all of his property & not leave her anything to live upon...."

Nicknames can also cause trouble, among the Virginia Welsh/South Carolina Scottish/Wales, for the census caretakers. Eatherenton, Ederington, Edrington, Etherington, Etherton, Ethington, Ethrington, Atherton....
Her signature appeared as Etherington which undoubtedly represented a phonetic misunderstanding.
Beginning on the 7th day of September, 1850 Census shows a 75 years old mother from Virginia. Secela Hougland lived with her youngest son James Hougland Jr (and his wife Electa and son Reuben) after the 1846 divorce due to assault and battery.

??Died 10 Oct 1850 in Louisville, Jefferson CO, Kentucky? Much of the speculation is focusing on Cecelia, it would be spectacular if it was her brought to a mental asylum from Boonville, Indiana (100 mi East) to Louisville, Kentucky?
Occasionally, I browsed thru 1042 pages LDS non-indexed film, 1850 Census Eastern Kentucky Cemetery, and found who died on 10 October 1850 in Louisville, Jefferson CO, Kentucky. It wasn't her......
