His WILL was written up on 25 May 1868,
Warrick County, IN, Will Book 2, pages 100-101.

In the name of the Benevolent Father of All I Jacob Hougland of Warrick County Indiana ____ make and publish this my last will and testament.

Item 1st I request that after my death my body be directly? discreetly? buried.

Item 2nd I request that all my just debts be paid.

Item 3rd I give and devise to my beloved wife Sarah Ann Hougland in lien of her interest in my _____ the Farm on which we now reside situate in Warrick County and State of Indiana containing fifty acres during her natural life and all the stock household goods furniture provisions and other goods and chattels which may be thereon at the time of my decease during her natural life as aforesaid also a tract of land described as follows to wit: The South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section thirty Six in town-ship Six Senth of range nine west in the Vincennes land district containing forty acres situated in Warrick County, Indiana.
And after her death, I desire that my said estate shall be equally divided between my beloved daughters Minerva P. Hawkins, Susan Theodore Hougland, Maria Jane Hougland and Martha Alice Hougland. But in case my said wife shall be entitled to her portion only as the law provides with the exception of the land described latterly in this Item 3rd.

Item 4th I devise and bequeath to my beloved grand-daughter Susan Vila Sovercool five dollars in money.

Item 5th I devise and bequeath to my beloved Sons Jesse L Hougland, William R Hougland and Jacob S Hougland one dollar each in mercy they having secured their portion prior to the date of this will.

Item 6th I do hereby nominate my beloved wife Sarah Ann Hougland guardian of my daughters Susan Theodore Hougland, Maria Jane Hougland and Martha Alice Hougland until the said Susan Theodore, Minerva Jane and Martha Alice arrives at the age of twenty one years or intermarries but in case my wife should again marry her guardianship shall cease and determine upon her intermarriage. And in her place I do hereby nominate my es-teemed friend _____________ to have the guardianship of my said daughters until they arrive at the age of twenty one or until marriage. My said guardian is hereby _______ to give my children a good English education and to rear them in habits of indersty and inculcate upon them as for as may be Christian forth and charity.

Item 7th I do hereby nominate and appoint my beloved brother William Hougland executor of this my last will and testament hereby authorizing and empowering him to compromise adjust release and discharge as he may deem proper the debts and claims due me. I do also authorize and empower him if it shall become necessary in order to pay my just debts to sell by private sale or in such manner upon such terms of credit or otherwise as he may think proper all or any part of my real estate and deed to purchasers to execute acknowledge and deliver in fee simple commencing with the forty acres described in the latter part or the latter part of Item 3rd situated in the Vincennes land district. I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made in testimony. Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of May 1868.

State of Indiana Be it remembered that on the 17th day of June 1868 O L Purdue and Warrick County B J Robertson both of the subscribing witnesses to the within and foregoing
Last Will and Testament of Jacob Hougland late of said county deceased.
Personally appeared before Robert Taylor clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Warrick County in the State of Indiana and being duly sworn by the clerk of said court upon their
Oaths declared and testified as follows that is to say that on this 23rd day of May 1868.
They saw the said Jacob Hougland sign his name to said instrument in writing as and for his last will and testament and that these deponents at the same time heard the said Jacob Hougland declare the said instrument in writing to be his last will and testament and that the said instrument in writing was the same time at the request of the said Jacob Hougland and with his consent attached and subscribed by the said O.L. Purdue and B.J. Robertson in the presence of the Said Testator and in the presence of each other as subscribing witnesses thereto and that the Said Jacob Hougland was at the time of the signing and subscribing of the said instrument in writing as aforesaid of full age that is more than twenty one years of age and of sound and disposing mind and memory and not under any coercion or restraint as the said deponents ___ behave and further deponents say not

In attestation where of I have hereunto subscribe my name and affixed the seal of said court State of Indiana I, Robert Taylor, clerk of the court of common pleas of Warrick County, Ind. do hereby certify that the within annexed last will and testament of Jacob Hougland has been duly admitted to probate and duly proved by the testimony of O.L. Purdue & B.J. Robertson, both of the subscribing witnesses thereto that a complete record of said will and of the testimony of the said witnesses in proof thereof has been by me duly made and record in Book 2 at pages 100 & 101 of the records of wills of said county – In testimony where of I have herein subscriber my name and affixed the seal of said court at Boonville this 17 day of June 1868.
