Layne was residing in Rockwell, KY, when his first wife Melsena died in childbirth after a year of marriage. He returned to Blaine, Lawrence Co., KY with his infant son, James Hatton Compton. In 1850, Layne was a raftsman on the Big Sandy River, along with his brother-in-law, Melville Hatton. Another brother-in-law, Hickman Davis, was his neighbor and a river pilot on the Big Sandy. He became a farmer, raised a large family, and was a church deacon. Layne died when struck by a moving wagon in Louisa, at the age of 72.
