FORMER POLICE CHIEF, M. MEADE JAMES, DIES; FUNERAL WEDNESDAY
M. Meade James, former Kalispell police chief, died Sunday in Kalispell following a series of heart attacks.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church and interment will follow at Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Waggener & Campbell Funeral Home.
M. Meade James was born July 19, 1911, in Kalispell and has lived here all of his life except for a year in Oakland, Calif., and a year in Portland, Ore.
He attended schools in Kalispell and was a graduate of the FBI Academy in Washington, D.C., and was a past president of the academy.
As a young mane, he participated in sports, playing baseball and basketball. He was a hunter and fisherman.
In 1932 he was married to Alyce Pennoyer. Two children, Janice Valerie and Douglas Meade, were born to them.
Mr. James Worked for the Kalispell police department from 1939 to 1959. The last 10 years he was chief of police.
During his time as chief, he organized the PeeWee Baseball League and the School Safety Patrol.
After his retirement in 1959, he worked for the Sheriff's department and more recently for the Montana Board of Pardons as area supervisor for the north-western district.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for many years.
He was a member of the Lions Club and the Elks Club. He was a member of the Braves Bench and served a year as president. He was a member of the Gleemen, Eastside Grange and Little Theater group.
His main interest was the Masonic order. He was past master of Trinity Lodge, past president of Scottish Rite and past president of the Flathead Shrine. He was a member of the Rainbow Assembly and DeMolay boards. He helped organize and was leader of the Shrine Band.
For many years he was a member of National Guard Company F. He entered the U.S. Navy in March of 1944 and served aboard the U.S.S. Casablanca. He received his honorable discharge in December, 1945.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Vinal, and two sisters, Irma Payne and Madge Stevens.
He is now survived by his widow at the family home, one daughter, Janice Ellefson, Titusville, Fla., and one son, Douglas Meade, Hoquiam, Wash.; four brothers, Willis O., Modesto, Calif., Kenneth V., Portland, Ore., Ray V. and Harlie, both of Kalispell; and one sister, Jean Boston, Portland, Ore.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Flathead Shrine Club for the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children.
