Ray James, who built many of the trails in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and also worked on Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, died Thursday in the Hot Springs Convalescent Home. He was 76.

He was born January 11, 1907 in Kalispell, the son of Jesse and Ida James. He attended Kalispell schools, and spent his youth in the backcountry working for the Forest Service.

In his later years, he worked as a sawyer in the lumber industry and at a sawmill before retiring in the late 1960s.

Mr. James was an avid sportsman, played softball and baseball on early Kalispell teams, and excelled in bowling. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 234 and the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Bud, Meade, Bill and Harley James, and two sisters, Madge Stevens and Irma Payne.

Survivors include a brother, Kenneth James, Portland, Oregon; a sister, Jean Boston, Stevensville, and several nieces and nephews.
